On haircuts

I got a much-needed haircut last week. I guess these pictures are pretty pointless, since it doesn't look too different - just a trim and added layers. How stressful is getting a haircut though? Because firstly, you have to call up to make an appointment, and I hate making phone calls. You turn up, and then sheepishly pull out pictures of Amanda Seyfried to explain the style that you want. Following that you have to make awkward small talk with the hairdresser for about an hour (I do love the head massage thing they do when they wash your hair though), while staring at your face in the mirror thinking about how bloated it looks with that hairdressing gown thing on. And then if it turns out badly, you have to pretend to like it (I have never complained about a haircut). Worse than a dentist appointment, and apparently you're supposed to get a trim every 6 weeks? This was my first visit to a salon in a year and a half. I'm quite happy with how my hair turned out though, it was pretty much what I wanted. And now it only takes half the time to blow-dry.

  1. Oh I so agree with you on that, hairdresser is worse than the dentist :c
I sometimes feel awkward to keep up the conversation up with the
haircutter as well haha :P Anyway you look lovely and fresh ^___^ Xx

    1. I know right, I never know if they want me to chat with them or if they'd rather do their job uninterrupted!

  2. I get my hair chopped once a year, ad I let it grow out until my next yearly haircut. Every 6 weeks, my bad...

  3. In my case I prefer going to the hairdresser than the dentist (wearing braces is not fun). The only thing that worries me is when they want to be "too creative" and cut your hair in a way you don't feel very sure about. I always say no and it can be stressful sometimes but I have found a hairdresser that just does what I really want. Apart from that I find it very relaxing, it is time just for me and I love reading all those fashion magazines as they are working on my hair.

    1. Yeah, it takes such a long time to grow out but is so damaged by the time it gets there!

  5. You pretty much summed up my feelings about getting my hair cut! Hehe this post just made me miss my long hair, book.

Looks really lovely, by the way!

  6. I agree, hairdressers are strange. I could never get what I wanted from them when I went. In the end, Icut half my hair off and now I just maintain it myself :) Because I'm cheap like that and I hate the head massage haha

    1. I used to cut my own hair but I would just do it really badly every time haha.

  7. Um, are we the same person?! Because I feel the EXACT same way about getting my hair done. I loathe making the appointment. I hate the small talk. I'd rather just get my hair done quietly. I'd prefer to visit the dentist or the doctor over the stylist. I haven't gotten my hair cut in about a year and I'm in need of one, like now. This post makes me feel 100x better about it, believe it or not! And I think I might make an appointment this week (or put it off until next week, lol). Thanks for sharing this :)

  8. hahah I loved this, I literally spend the whole time at the hair dresser looking at my ankles and thinking they look super bloated as they pop out from under the black gown thing.

Your hair looks nice! Sometimes all you need is a bit of a trim and it feels so much fresher :)

    1. How does the black gown thing make everything look so bad?? True, my hair feels so much less manky now.

  9. Oooh love love love your hair like this! It doesn't look too different, but wow...i just realize your hair has gotten really long! I tend to do extreme things to my hair (i.e. chop it off completely). I plan to grow it out again before cutting it super short. I try not to stress too much about hair cause it grows back fast enough, but I am picky about which salons I go to!

    1. Yeah it has, I sorted of stopped thinking about it for a while and suddenly it was super long. It's true, hair grows, but it takes such a long time I get sentimental about it.

  10. Your hair looks really nice !

I completely agree about it being an uncomfortable experience. The last time I went, the guy basically shunned what I said and questioned what I wanted because, "do you really want that ? What about the future? Will you maintain this look". BTW I was asking for more layers, not asking for him to shave my head.

  11. Haha definitely agree with you. Haircuts are SUCH a chore, but then when you get one you're like "Man.. I should do this more often!" LOL!

  12. I seriously agree with everything you just said. I walked into a salon I'd never been to before because I didn't want to call up & make an appointment. Then I got this horribly chatty hairdresser that asked me a million personal questions. I just wanted to get out of there. After I got home I realised how badly cut my hair was & now I have to wait a few weeks for the cut to grow out so I can call up and make an appointment with my normal hairdresser & explain to her why I cheated on her. Its SO stressful.

I'm going to get my haircut when we visit Adelaide this weekend - I found a lady that doesn't charge too much and knows how I like my fringe. It's so hard. Good for you! The hair looks great :)

  15. You look lovely Jane! Yeah, it's 'supposed' to be every 6-8 weeks, but you know what?!?!? Hair grows on average half an inch a month...it's like it's never growing! I used to do that but now I trim every 3 months or...not at all. It's so easy to get envious of the girls who never cut their hair and it just grows.

    1. Seriously, if I got my hair cut every six weeks I feel like I'd end up bald hahaha.

  16. HAHA, I have never made a phone call to the hairdressers. I seem to just pop up and wait in a very short line to get it all done. But I do hate explaining what I want, I am always very detailed with the particulars because you don't want to go home with your hair 10cm shorter than what you wanted.

  18. oh my goodness i need a haircut too. i got a trim a couple of months ago, along with thinning out some parts that were really thick, but i think i need layers. i hate calling too and i always make my husband do it since i go when he goes. and i hate talking too while they cut. lol. i call these my introvert problems.

  20. Your hair looks really great :) Haha these are my exact thoughts every time I go to the hairdresser - which is why I've avoided going in over 2 years!

  21. Your haircut looks so good! You totally got everything spot on about trips to the hairdressers too, haha. I recently got my haircut whilst on holiday in Taiwan and the head massage was definitely my favourite part. Another plus was that I don't speak Mandarin, so there was no chance of any awkward small talk due to the language barrier, haha!

    1. Generally I don't like a language barrier because I want to be clear with what I want but that is definitely an upside to it haha.

  22. haha you have pretty much nailed how I feel about the hairdressers. I've never complained either even though I've had some bad ones and I hate staring at my face for an hour at a time. I usually only go twice a year because I hate it that much. But it feels so nice having a little layer and no split ends

I go to the same hairdresser as I went to as a kid. However, his latest try out (I basically told him: as long as you don't make my look like a boy, knock yourself out), is reaaaally bad :x It just doesn't look like anything when I wear it loose, and I have to use huuuge clips etc to keep it in a ponytail. So annoying :x
I'm going to tell him though, he can handle that and perhaps I get a discount or something? :p

  26. Appointment? PLS. I just show up out of nowhere unannounced because I am so important. (Making phone calls is already so stressful)
How to avoid conversation with barber/hairdresser: don't make eye contact. I've never complained about a bad haircut to my hairdresser though. She cut my hair ridiculously short once, and I looked like a (hopefully cute) boy for weeks. Mind you, this was in highschool.
