New in

Three things I have bought recently. I've had this wild urge to buy things lately so this is probably just the beginning.

  • UNIQLO striped tee. Yes, I guess I do already have a striped t shirt exactly like this one but I rarely see striped shirts that I 100% like at a suitable price point, so I thought I'd buy a backup. It's actually a men's small, but the cashier told me that a lot of the girls who worked there got one for themselves (there isn't an equivalent in the ladies' range, for some reason).
  • The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton. I talked about it here, I read it as an e-book and liked it so much I wanted a hard copy for re-reads. Plus, it's a pretty cover.
  • The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I also read this on the Kindle and wanted a copy for my shelf, I really enjoyed it. The premise of the book made it sound like it was going to be really pretentious but it didn't turn out to be. It's about a group of college students and it starts off with a murder - the story is about why it happened. I got really sucked into the setting, characters, and relationships. It's not a happy book, it's pretty tragic actually, but enjoyable to read. Apparently it's never been adapted for the screen, I would love for a movie or mini-series (for The Luminaries too, actually).
P.S. Thanks for all the book recommendations in the last post, working through them now!

  2. If you want a nice read, my favourite right now is "The Elegance of a Hedgehog" it was originally french so the translations might not make it elegantly written but I hope you invest in the characters and story like I've done.

  7. The tee looks great. I have heard of Donna Tartt but never read any of her books. But if it isn't happy, I will stay away from it... can't read sad stories or listen to sad music at the moment.

  10. The Secret History is one of my favourite books ever - I love that Penguin, my copy is so beat-up and dogeared I'll need to invest in a new one soon. I got the Luminaries for my mum for her birthday, so maybe I'll have to borrow it once she's done!

  11. I really love how your last purchases also aesthetically match so nicely. Both books are now on my reading lists and I am excited to check them out soon. I am counting on my winter holiday for relaxation time - which means family and reading.

  12. I LOVE Uniqlo! I actually have quite a few mens clothes from there. I don't really see the different between a lot of their gendered clothing. It's all so nice and minimal.

    1. That's true - I do wish they'd make ladies equivalents for their men's stuff in the interest of sizing availability though!

  18. ha, i know all about this wild urge to buy things. and when you find something you wear all the time and that's perfect like your striped tee then it makes sense to buy a backup, i've definitely done that before or bought things in different colour-ways because it's not every day you find the perfect t-shirt/skater skirt, etc.

  22. Great new buys! Previously, I wasn't much of a fan of kindles and firmly preferred buying hard copies of books, but lately I've been more and more towards the idea of just reading books on an e-reader or kindle (I assume they're cheaper that way?) and then just buying hard copies of the ones that I really want in my bookshelf. Reading your post reminded me of that :)

The Secret History sounds interesting, by the way. I might give it a read soon!

    1. Generally they're cheaper (and classics you can get for free), sometimes there's not much of a price difference so I just go for the book in that case. I wasn't a fan of the e reader before but I'm reading so much more now!
